This wine is characterized by the complexity of five types of merlot that grow in five different plots to produce a single wine, providing the particular characteristics of each of these vineyards.

Preparation: The land where the Abadal 5 is made is limestone on red clay.

It is aged for 12 months in French, Central European and American oak.

DO Pla de Bages

That Bages is a land of wines is a fact. It is not clear when vine cultivation began in this region, but the author of the medieval manuscript "Miracula Sancti Benedicti" interpreted the name Bages as coming from Bacus, the pagan god of wine. From Bacchus came Bacasis and finally Bages.

The first signs of vines and wine in the Bages region are found in the Roman villas. In the town of Boades (Castellgalí) an Iberian-Roman ceramic piece dating from the XNUMXst or XNUMXnd century BC was found, which contained an inscription with the word WINE. Several remains of amphoras were also found, which are preserved in the Museu Comarcal de Manresa. The first indication of wine production was found in La Feliua (Sant Fruitós de Bages) where a large stone slab was located, the base of an ancient press dating from the end of Roman times in the XNUMXth or XNUMXth century AD.

Climate

Within a mid-mountain Mediterranean continental climate, Bages has the ideal conditions for growing vines: an exceptional microclimate, low rainfall and strong temperature fluctuations, as well as clayey and calcareous soil. His wines are impregnated with balsamic notes of lavender, thyme and rosemary. These aromatic plants populate the pine, oak and holm oak forests that surround the vineyards.

Among the White Grapes

Picapoll Blanc

Late variety, with oval grain and thick skin, which protects it during its long maturation. It gives wines of medium acidity that makes them very pleasant and enhances their sensation of volume. Aromatically it reveals citrus notes, such as grapefruit, lavender aromatic herb and in cooler years floral notes (white flower like jasmine).

Macabeo

Medium cycle variety. It brings elegance to the coupages of the area. It is characterized by notes of white fruit and a medium contribution of degree and acidity.

Malmsey

Malvasia is a white variety, although there is also a black subvariety. The Malvasia grape is small and not very compact. The grain is fat, tender and ovoid, very sweet and aromatic.
The wine made from this wine variety is also called Malvasia, or Malvasia wine, a white, sweet, fragrant and highly alcoholic wine. In the Middle Ages it was supposed to have medicinal and tonic properties and it is cited in Tirant lo Blanc.

Among the Black/Red Grapes

Mandó is an almost forgotten black grape variety that is making a good comeback. The wines made with this variety surprise for their quality and personality. For this reason, a great effort is being made for its reintroduction, rescuing the few strains that have survived its abandonment. Gives considerably compact medium-sized segments. Its grains are small and spherical, reaching maturity with a purple hue.

The most conserved autochthonous black variety in the area. Medium cycle, fat grape and medium high production. It gives blacks with little color but a lot of freshness and tannic structure, with a style of continental wines (that is, more similar to Pinots Noirs and Nebiolos than to Bordeaux varieties). With difficult-to-ripen tannins, this is why it had always been considered a good variety for obtaining rosés.

black pikapoll

Little compact black grape with small, spherical grains, very tasty and with a very thin and tender skin.
The wine made with the black picapoll grape is pale in color, with a high alcoholic degree and an intense aroma.

Information about Roqueta Origen

The history of the Roqueta family is the history of a family of winegrowers. The origins of its winemaking activity date back to the 1.199th century - specifically to the year 1.199-, and are linked to the history of the Bages region (Barcelona), where vineyard cultivation has developed since Roman times. The oldest documents that are preserved, state that in the year XNUMX wine was already produced in the Masía Roqueta -located in Santa Maria d 'Horta d' Avinyó-, which preserves vestiges of more than eight centuries dedicated to the production of wine: presses, stone tanks, presses, ...

At the end of the 1898th century, Ramon Roqueta Torrentó laid the foundations for this activity to acquire business dimensions when in 1983 he moved to Manresa -the capital of the Bages region- and founded Ramon Roqueta (DO Catalunya) the first family winery. Later, Abadal (DO Pla de Bages) would be founded in 2007, and LaFou Celler (DO Terra Alta), in XNUMX. The Roqueta family has two more projects in Terra Alta: La Picossa and Massaluca.

Abadal is a winery located in the town of Santa Maria of Horta Avinyó (Bages) founded by Valenti Roqueta in 1983 with the intention of making the uniqueness of a land known through its wines. These are vineyards close to the family home (Masía Roqueta) with more than 9 centuries of history and where forest and vineyard coexist wonderfully in a microclimate of contrasts.
