DO Bierzo (Designation of Origin)

The Bierzo Region is located to the northwest of the province of León, within the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, and occupies an area of 2.954,28 kilometres, which represents 18% of the provincial surface. Geographically it limits with the provinces of Ourense, Lugo and Asturias and is a communication axis between Galicia, León and Asturias. It has a characteristic Mediterranean micro-climate, with milder temperatures than the neighboring areas and its low altitude generally prevents late frosts, which is quite benign for the harvest, which is normally one month earlier than the rest of Castile and the Rioja.

Extreme temperatures occur in winter and summer, with the average being 12,3ºC, registering average minimums of 3,6º in the cold months and maximums of 23,6º in the hottest months.

Rainfall is of the order of 721 mm in an average year. The average annual insolation is estimated at 2.100 to 2.200 hours of sunshine throughout the year.

In El Bierzo, the vineyard is mainly oriented towards humid brown earth soils, slightly acidic and therefore free of carbonates, typical of humid climates.

The degree of acidity ranges from 4 to 8,5; in the valleys values higher than 6 predominate.

The determining quality factors are in the terraces with little inclination where the vineyards are located very close to the rivers or on semi-terraced slopes or in vineyards with a pronounced inclination and at altitudes between 450 and 1.000 meters.
