This mollusk that has a presence all over the planet, but with all due respect to all the others, the Galician has earned the reputation of being the best in the world. Why? Well, it is very simple, its texture, its quality, its nutritional values ​​provided by the waters of the Atlantic, so appreciated and revered for being magical and generous towards the seafood and fish of those latitudes.

However, in this part of Spain, not all players play the same game or at least with the same rules.

We in Made in Spain Gourmet, We have discovered in these two years of an online store of only Spanish gourmet products, that the portfolio of brands that say they make Galician mussels is enormous, and the disparity in prices is also wide. The most important thing is to differentiate between those who have the seal of Mussel from Galicia PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) of those that do not. That already makes a clear differentiation between those who produce and elaborate in Galicia and those who only produce in Galicia (and they can bring mussels from anywhere on the globe.

The Galician Mussel was a pioneer in its request and became the first product of the sea in Europe to obtain the "Protected Designation of Origin" quality label. In 2007, the Galician Mejillón Protected Designation of Origin was registered in the European Union registry and currently it is the only PDO for a seafood product in Spain.

Conservas Nosa: our choice of the highest quality

The mussel from Galicia is assured of a meat yield that makes it a product of the highest quality, both for its size and for its incomparable flavour. What captivated us Canned Nosa was that they own the rafts (a place where mussels are grown in the sea). And that gave us the confidence to deal with people who know what they want for their business and their environment, respect, care and, above all, obtain the best possible product. One of the characteristics that struck us, because we have the same thought, is that, if the quality of their mussels does not reach the expected quality (that is, they are not enthusiastic about it), they do not market it that year. So simple and forceful. For us, that argument gave us all the confidence we needed to see what it was for Canned Nosa, a product of the highest quality, and therefore, a pride in sharing it with consumers of what it is not.

El Mytilus Galloprovincialis that they produce comes 100% from the Galician Rías, specifically from the Arousa estuary, Pontevedra (Galicia).

It is extracted from the rafts during the months of October, November and December, when they have the optimum size, both in texture and flavor. Later they are fried in extra virgin olive oil, and they are selected one by one, manually, by size. The byssus (the hair) is removed with scissors, one by one! A wonderful pickle sauce is added, which is made only with natural products, without any additives. And finally, and also in an artisanal way, that is, by hand, they are packed in cans for future marketing.

Limited edition: a guarantee of quality 

The stories of many of the Galician processors that presumably market Galician Mussel, then do not have the PDO seal or cannot put on their boxes that the origin is Galician (which is not the same as made in Galicia). It can be made in Galicia, but its origin can be in…New Zealand for example.

Each year there is a limited and numbered production of each caliber, and each can also has its identifying stamp with the number of the can, the caliber and the total production. Marvelous! Their sizes range from the almost unique 2/3 (yes, yes, only 2 or 3 mussels in a can, you can imagine the size) to 19/25, which for us is wonderful and juicy, and for them, although are excellent, the 4/6 and 6/8 are the top of range.

How to enjoy them?

There are many ways to enjoy these mussels, but the one I like the most is natural in vermouth time. with a vermouth Lustau (white, rosé or red) very cold with a slice of orange for rosé and red and lime for white.
