Description
Data sheet:
Winery: Mervm Priorati (Pere Ventura)
DOCa Priorat
Variety: 60% Black Grenache, 15% Carignan, 15% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
Grade: 15,0% vol.
Tasting note:
Start 2020 stands out for a fresh, fruity and balanced nose. On the palate, on the other hand, it is fleshy thanks to the good structure of ripe tannins and always friendly for its optimal acidity. The taste of wild red fruit, raspberry and currant is also perceived, along with certain aniseed notes. The aftertaste is long and elegant. In the glass, it shows the bright shades of ripe cherry and pale golden iridescence.
Serving temperature: 16º C
Geology and Soil:
From llicorell; rocky and very poor in organic matter, so the vines have little vigor and offer low yields. The mother rock is laminated, which forces the vine to develop roots up to 15 meters. Both factors contribute to creating an ideal environment to withstand summer stress and consolidate a progressive and perfect ripening of the grape.
Vintage
The 2020 vintage has been characterized by a rather rainy spring and a dry and warm summer and autumn. Garnacha production has been irregular due to the difficulties of setting. The hailstorm in June had no significant effects. The harvest was very healthy and stood out for its quality.
Pairing
At Made in Spain Gourmet, we recommend it to accompany partridge with truffles or mushrooms, duck magret with grape sauce and sweet potato, dishes cooked with free-range eggs or a selection of artisan cheeses. Its quality allows you to take it with whatever you want.
Crafting
Manual harvest collected in boxes of 20 kg. 100% of the vintage is skidded. Fermentation / maceration at a controlled temperature and carried out in stainless steel tanks. After three weeks, it is gently pressed through a horizontal pneumatic press. Once pressed, the wine goes into 225 l French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine ages in oak barrels between 8 and 12 months prior to blending and bottling. each bottle evolves for several months in the cellar before going on the market.
Vintage 2020: excellent
At Mervm Priorati they work hard and strive every day to guarantee the quality standards of their wines. They accept the extreme weather conditions and suffer the adversities of the heroic viticulture that marks the character of the land. They work exclusively with their own grapes from their farms: the origin is the only way to guarantee wines of the highest quality. The result of all this is a very limited production marked by the terroir.
The 2020 vintage was rated Excellent for its quality and for the health status of the grapes. However, abundant rainfall in the vineyard and excess humidity in combination with overly warm temperatures created the perfect environment for the development of one of the most devastating fungal diseases: downy mildew. In Mervm Priorati, it affected the flowering time and, as a consequence, an important part of the vines did not bear fruit. The grape harvest in 2020 was therefore very good but also very scarce.
This vintage will be of great prestige for Mervm Priorati wines.
The region has the coveted DOCa...
Currently, the region has the coveted "Qualified Denomination of Origin" designation that in Spain is only shared with Rioja.
The Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin is a small mountainous region located in the province of Tarragona. The Sierra de Montsant massif delimits it to the north, to the west is the Sierra de La Figuera, to the east is the Sierra de Molló and, to the south, the territory opens up following the course of the Siurana river downstream towards the Ebro The Siurana river and its tributaries are the main geographical artery of the area, and cause a series of valleys and small plains thanks also to the geological sinuosity of the mountains and mountain slopes. In accordance with the legislation of Catalonia regarding the regional administrative division, the territory of the DOCa Priorat falls within a more extensive administrative delimitation known as the "Comarca del Priorat", which also has a part of territory that is not part of the wine-growing Priorat .
The Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin has an area of 17.629 hectares, of which 2.163,97 are planted with vines and cultivated by 513 winegrowers. Administratively, 9 municipalities are part of the DOCa Priorat: Bellmunt del Priorat, Gratallops, El Lloar, El Molar, La Morera de Montsant (which includes the town of Scala Dei), Poboleda, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, La Vilella Alta and La Vilella Baixa. In addition, within the limits of the DOQ Priorat there is also the northern part of the municipality of Falset (the Masos de Falset area) and the eastern part of the municipality of El Molar (Les Solanes del Molar). La Morera de Montsant, Scala Dei, Gratallops, Torroja del Priorat, Porrera and Poboleda formerly made up the Priorat de la Cartuja de Scala Dei. The rest were included in the delimitation of the appellation of origin that was carried out in 1932 and that makes up the current territory of the DOCa Priorat. As a consequence of the expansion of the cultivation of the vine and the quality of its wines, promoted, encouraged and dominated by the Carthusian monks, the area acquired worldwide renown that makes it today one of the most important wine-growing areas in the world.
