Perinet winery

75cl bottle

This monovarietal Garnacha comes from Poboleda, one of the first wine-growing areas of Priorat. The Mas Vell vineyard is characterized by its south orientation and the great sun exposure that this entails. Round, expressive and fruity wines emerge from its rocky soils and radiant sun.

The first selection of the grape is made in the field, leaving any unsuitable fruit in the vineyard. The grapes are then sorted by hand. All batches are kept cold for 2-3 days before beginning a slow fermentation in stainless steel barrels and tanks. Gentle movements are applied several times a day in the 600L tanks and barrels. The macerations last a long period, more than 30 days to achieve optimum intensity and tannin extraction. The wine is extracted by gravity and the skins and rapa are pressed very gently. The wine returns to the original maceration barrels for aging. New and 1 year old French oak barrels are used for 18 months to house the wine before bottling, without clarification or filtering. This wine is rare and unique, mature and of singular expression, an authentic Garnacha from Priorat.

Description

THE PERINET VINEYARDS

The Perinet vineyards comprise three great visions of the historic Priorat. The project as a whole allows the Perinet vineyards to shape a new balance of styles in winemaking. Specifically, the three climates of the vineyard correspond to three styles of wine: warm and mature: Mas Vell, fresh and long: Mas del Xes, and Mediterranean and aromatic: Pendents, in the municipality of Porrera.

The three plots show a strong personality where several local and international varieties grow on steep slopes and terraces with different exposure and orientation. This means that the authenticity of the landscape is transmitted in different wines from the estate, always linked to the climate and the slate soil of Priorat.

Board Characteristics

DOC Priorat
Grade: 16%
Variety: 100% Grenache

Tasting note: Deep ruby color with violet and bluish rims

On the nose: Caramelized red fruits. Elegant intense floral perfume. Ripe blackberry with hints of plum jam. Balsamic notes

On the palate: Black slate and ripe notes combine with dry herbal complexity. Full-bodied tannins with balanced acidity. Ripe black olives with a unique and fragrant finish

Preparation: The Mas Vell vineyard is completely oriented to the south, facing the sun, capturing the maximum potential ripeness of the fruit. Its altitude is what distinguishes it from the neighboring vineyards. Most of the plantations are around 200-250 meters, while Mas Vell is at 385-450 meters. This additional elevation allows open exposure of the green roof and the influence of cool winds that help retain acidity and vigor. Round, expressive and fruity wines emerge from its rocky soils and its radiant sun. The extreme climatic conditions of 2017 have resulted in a harvest that expresses the classic Priorat terroir without impurities.

It is fermented 60% in barrels, 40% stainless steel, and aged for 18 months in 80% new 600l French oak.

Pairing: en Made in Spain Gourmet We recommend it with meats, cured goat and sheep cheeses, sausages, acorn-fed ham and Foie gras.

The region has the coveted DOCa...

Currently, the region has the coveted "Qualified Denomination of Origin" designation that in Spain is only shared with Rioja.

The Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin is a small mountainous region located in the province of Tarragona. The Sierra de Montsant massif delimits it to the north, to the west is the Sierra de La Figuera, to the east is the Sierra de Molló and, to the south, the territory opens up following the course of the Siurana river downstream towards the Ebro The Siurana river and its tributaries are the main geographical artery of the area, and cause a series of valleys and small plains thanks also to the geological sinuosity of the mountains and mountain slopes. In accordance with the legislation of Catalonia regarding the regional administrative division, the territory of the DOCa Priorat falls within a more extensive administrative delimitation known as the "Comarca del Priorat", which also has a part of territory that is not part of the wine-growing Priorat .

The Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin has an area of 17.629 hectares, of which 2.163,97 are planted with vines and cultivated by 513 winegrowers. Administratively, 9 municipalities are part of the DOCa Priorat: Bellmunt del Priorat, Gratallops, El Lloar, El Molar, La Morera de Montsant (which includes the town of Scala Dei), Poboleda, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, La Vilella Alta and La Vilella Baixa. In addition, within the limits of the DOQ Priorat there is also the northern part of the municipality of Falset (the Masos de Falset area) and the eastern part of the municipality of El Molar (Les Solanes del Molar). La Morera de Montsant, Scala Dei, Gratallops, Torroja del Priorat, Porrera and Poboleda formerly made up the Priorat de la Cartuja de Scala Dei. The rest were included in the delimitation of the appellation of origin that was carried out in 1932 and that makes up the current territory of the DOCa Priorat. As a consequence of the expansion of the cultivation of the vine and the quality of its wines, promoted, encouraged and dominated by the Carthusian monks, the area acquired worldwide renown that makes it today one of the most important wine-growing areas in the world.

MORE OF THE XES

The Mas de en Xes vineyard is the largest in Perinet, around 10,64 ha, spread over 60% north-facing slopes (Cabernet and Syrah) and 40% northeast (Garnacha and Mazuelo). Syrah and Cabernet are planted on terraces and the Garnacha and Mazuelo vines on narrow margins that simulate an amphitheater from where you can see an exceptional view of Montsant at 400 meters above sea level. The vineyard was planted between the years 2000-2001. The harvest is manual and very separated in time, given the difference in the maturation of the grapes.

MORE VELL

The sunny orientation of this vineyard is its most differentiating element, the vineyard is oriented to the south from where grapes of exceptional maturity are taken. Unlike most areas in the south of Priorat, where the vines grow at a lower altitude (200-250m), the altitude of Mas Vell is between 385 and 450m. The height makes the aromas of the fruit are present in the wines together with a remarkable acidity, which confers a beautiful and balanced maturity. The vineyard area is 7,44ha, planted with Merlot, Syrah, Garnacha and Cabernet. The vines are 17 years old, arranged in terraces and arbors. Both pruning and harvesting are done manually.

EARRINGS

Pendents, located near Porrera, is the steepest plot of our vineyards. In some areas the slope exceeds 30º. With a completely north-eastern (west) orientation, Pendents is strongly influenced by offshore winds. With a size of 4 hectares, this is the smallest vineyard planted in Perinet, although it enjoys great personality, given the purity of the landscape and the spectacular nature of the complex. The varieties planted are Mazuelo (Cariñena), Garnacha and Cabernet.

Information about Perinet

Perinet is located in the north of the prestigious DOCa Priorat, an old wine-producing area where Grenache and Carignan flourish in a Mediterranean climate that is especially suitable for growing grapes.

Located 90 minutes southwest of Barcelona, Perinet is the essence of Priorat, a combination of the region's strong wine-making history, slate-laden soils, and deep, concentrated wines with structure and balance.

Its owners Kevis MGlynn and Lane Auten, passionate about the wine world, arrived in Spain in 2012 and five years ago y It was to see the Priorat and fall at its feet as they commented. The Perinet winery is located in one of the most spectacular places in Priorat, among the populations of La Morera del Montsant and Porrera. Surrounded by vineyards of local varieties Cariñena and Garnacha and the French Carbernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.

The three vineyards that make up the winery, Finca Mas Vell, Mas d'en Xesc and Finca Planetes, to travel more than 120 hectares of vineyards exposed on a slope. Three estates with wines with personality, with very different expressions thanks to their slate terroir and climate: warm and mature in Mas Vell; fresh at Mas Xesc and Mediterranean at Finca Planetes. Authentic, powerful, unique and generous wines.

The winery has its origin in the XNUMXth century, hand in hand with the French family of the Perinet, who settled in the region fleeing from phylloxera in France. The passage of time transformed that small piece of land into a vineyard with excellent quality wines.

Perinet's flagship wine, 1194, pays homage to the Carthusian monastery of Escaladei (Scala Dei in Latin), founded in 1194, and whose monks introduced the art of viticulture to Priorat.

Today, Perinet's avant-garde winery, impressive boot rooms and vineyards help define the reputation of the entire region.

The Perinet estate represents a total of 120 hectares next to the towns of Poboleda and Porrera, more than 400m above sea level. The modern winery building has an exquisite Gaudí-inspired barrel room, a tasting room with majestic views of the Montsant mountain range, and a cozy terrace to savor the estate's products. Perinet is considered an aesthetic jewel among the Priorat wineries.
